Riu sailing - an unique experience
Most sailboats cruising through the Caribbean make a point of stopping in the Dominican Republic, to see a little of the country, to connect with other sailors, or stock up on supplies for the rest of their journey. Boats moor predominantly at the larger marina locations in Puerto Plata, Luperon, Samana and Bayahibe. Luperon is the only 'safe' harbor in the Dominican Republic. If you would like to go sailing once you are here, group day trips are offered on larger sailboats and catamarans through Tour Operators in most of the larger tourism destinations in the Dominican Republic, leaving from Puerto Plata, Luperon, Samana and Bayahibe. There are also watersports clubs at many tourism destinations offering catamaran and/or dinghy rental for personal sailing use. These trips on large catamarans or sailboats are offered from Luperon, Puerto Plata, Sosua, Samana, Punta Cana and Bayahibe (to Saona Island). They are usually half-day or day-long excursions that offer ocean cruises along the Dominican Republic's beautiful coastal areas, with stops along the way to go swimming or snorkeling. Some of these trips also offer onboard entertainment, including food and beverages.
